Equal Opportunities course

Direct Discrimination occurs when a person is treated less favorably than others are, or would be in similar circumstances. For example, refusing to employ someone just because they were female or male, or refusing to allow someone to rent your house because you are black or white.

Indirect Discrimination occurs when a condition or requirement applies to all, but the proportion of one race or sex who can comply with it is significantly smaller. It is to the detriment of the person to whom it is applied. For example, insisting that someone should be of a particular height often discriminates against members of some ethnic minority groups, and if it is not essential for doing the job effectively, such requirement could constitute indirect discrimination.

It cannot be justified irrespective of the sex or race of the person to whom it is applied.

It is usually unintentional.
